Need something fun to do? Live in the Greater Toronto Area? Love being outdoors? Try the City Nature Challenge! It is an exciting event where participants explore their local environment, find wild plants and animals, and share observations with others. Running from April 29 to May 2, this free event is open to everyone. By participating, you not only learn more about the nature that’s around you, but you also support scientists, governments, and local communities working to understand the natural world around them. Each observation you record is like an extra piece in the puzzle toward living more sustainably.
Playing together we all learn more about protecting species in our cities. It’s a win for you and a win for the planet!

Moving Connections: Dancing Collected Stories

Join our FREE online movement practice from the comfort and safety of home! Introducing a new variation of Kaeja d’Dance’s beloved Moving Connections, called Dancing Collected Stories! Moving Connections is a community movement practice, conceived and developed by Karen Kaeja in 2018. During the pandemic, this practice took the form of virtual workshops delivered via Zoom. Dancing Collected Stories offers participants the opportunity to collaboratively create new movement experiences in each session that are based on personal stories.

Participants will be led through the workshops by a team of professional dancers. This program is designed for all ages, bodies, and abilities – no previous dance experience required. Adults, aged 50+ are encouraged to participate. Committed to making our programming accessible during the pandemic, we are pleased to continue to offer all Moving Connections sessions free of charge.

Tea & Talk: Pickering’s Roaring 1920s

You will be lead around by an experienced birder who will give you tips and tricks to help you along the trail to spot the many birds in the Pickering area. Join us for a very special Mother’s Day Anne Experience. Feel the maternal connections with Anne Shirley and Marilla Cuthbert as you explore the world of Anne of Green Gables in a behind-the-camera tour of Pickering Museum Village, the set of various ‘Anne’ productions for almost forty years. Enjoy a picnic lunch, taste a scone as you blend your own tea, and listen to an audio tour with Anne recounting some of her favourite memories. Visit the historic houses and learn about Lucy Maud Montgomery and historic fashions from Anne’s time. Take part in a painting workshop as you bring the past to life in this fun experience.
Lunch includes ½ egg sandwich, ½ turkey and cheese sandwich, a drink and a snack of an apple and cookies. Scone is served with cream and jam, and tea is blended by participants. No substitutions available.

May 9th until June 10th - Strides for Kids is a virtual exercise a thon that you can participate in right from the comfort of your own home! You can participate individually, with a fundraising goal of $500 or as a team of 4, with a fundraising goal of $1500. Funds raised will support Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs for children and youth. You can sing up for CanadaHelps and join the event page through DC AF’s FB page to sty in touch with other participants and receive updates! Hop in your jalopy and journey back in time to the Roaring 1920s. Learn about Pickering’s toe-tapping music scene and how the dry days of prohibition led to bootlegging. Presented as part of Drama in Durham: War on Whisky tours through South Durham. After your visit to the museum, Download the Temperance & Temptation podcast and self-guide driving tour to visit local micro breweries and learn how the Bluenoses who supported Temperance openly clashed with the bootleggers and moonshiners who defied the movement.
This program is done entirely from your car. Price is per car, not per person. Tour is approximately 1 hour in length. Cost: $22.60 including tax ($20 before tax) per vehicle.

Spend the day with a heritage cook! Travel back to the smells, tastes and textures of an 1850s inn using seasonal ingredients from Upper Canada. Join our costumed heritage cook to prepare an 1850s-inspired three-course spring meal over the wood stove, and then enjoy the fruits of your labour in the museum’s 1850s-era dining room. ‘Spinster’ used to mean someone who spun wool. Experience the texture and softness of fleece as you work with our Museum Interpreter to wash, pick and card wool. Then, you'll try your hand, and practice the art of spinning fleece into yarn on a drop spindle. The program fee includes a museum-made drop spindle for you to keep, and a hank of fleece to use in the program to get you started! Minimum age: 14 years.
